Will Mobile Video take over our lives? Well, maybe not our lives, but possibly our kids lives....
According to the Nielson Company, the average US Citizen spends nearly 150 hours a month (~20%) watching some form of TV. It seems that teenagers watch the least amount of cable/broadcast television of any age group but watch over twice as much Mobile TV of any age group. Is this a novelty thing or are their minds so indoctrinated in the tiny screens of their hand-held game consoles that this is simply a more normal way for them to watch?
I think mobile video will become an important part of our daily consumption of information. I don't think mobile video is a good medium for watching many full-length motion pictures on TV, but I can certainly see people watching news, sports, talk shows and user generated web clips. The growth in mobile video in the US is evident in the average 10% increase in viewing time people have spent on mobile video each quarter with apparently a large portion of that viewing occurring on the Apple iPhone. Yet, while Internet TV seems to be stealing time away from traditional (cable/broadcast) TV, Mobile TV seems to be simply increasing the overall viewing time.
As mobile capacity increases in the next 5 years, I think we will see a steady increase in the total amount of viewing time per month. It should be interesting to watch.....
