Emerging SIP-based services offer enormous potential for service differentiation and revenue generation, but relying on SIP also presents significant challenges.

Although carriers now use Session Border Controllers (SBCs) for signaling translation and security, many SBCs do not fully address handling SIP in a multimedia environment. New capabilities are needed, such as SIP mediation, media translation, conversion of signaling protocols in addition to SIP, and the ability to handle new (and critical) security functions.

After examining the challenges of SIP deployments, Dialogic has produced a white paper that discusses these challenges, explains the new capabilities needed, and introduces a technology concept called the Multimedia Border Element (MMBE) for handling SIP in a multimedia environment.
