Last week, Broadcom became the latest of a series of companies: Polycom and Skype to open up their wideband audio codec to the public: http://gigaom.com/2009/11/10/broadcom-goes-open-source-to-push-hd-voice/
I find this a curious trend. Is wideband audio really going to make a difference in the landline world? Will opening up their codecs gain these companies market share?
I don't know the answers to these questions, but I would welcome some discussion on the topic. What do you folks think?
I do believe this is a good thing for the Dialogic community. I think access to codecs is a healthy thing because it opens up competition and sets the stage for somebody to rise above all the others.
Who will be the winner? Which codec will dominate?
