Last week at the IPTV World Forum, there were some sparse references to 3D TV, but I expect to see a lot more in the next weeks as the NAB Show approaches.
3D TV has been hailed as everything from “the next big thing” to “a pointless gimmick”, but it seems that manufacturers are genuinely committed to it, and Sony have promised to release a TV set in time for the 2010 World Cup (Football that is, or “Soccer” as many of my colleagues would understand it). Rumour has it that the Sony unit will cost around $4000, which could either be “good value” or “outrageous”, depending on your point of view.
As probably the last person in the World to have seen “Avatar” in 3D, I will probably skip 3D TV for a while, but meanwhile Gartner is predicting that by 2012 there could be over 11 million 3D televisions per year being manufactured.
