Just for a bit of fun I pulled together this timeline showing some of what I think have been important moments in the development of video.

1841 Fox Talbot (film negative process)
1830-1880 Revolving drum animation (various technologies)
1897 Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) invented, at least for use in the science lab.
1926 John Logie Baird demonstrates TV
1927 "The Jazz Singer" - first popular "talkie". In the same year the silent "Metropolis" came out.
(Movies at this time were in "Academy Ratio", 4:3, aspect ratio)
1930s Colour movies: "Gone With the Wind" / "Wizard of Oz"
1940s Growth of TV (USA)
1950s TV (UK - Queen's Coronation, 1953, was an inflection point in TV buying)
1950s Widescreen cinema - (Cinemascope etc)
1960s Color TV (USA)
1964 First video conferencing (Bell Picturephone) demonstrated.
1970s Colour TV (UK)
1980s Rise of the VCR
1981 MTV launched - dedicated music video channel
1981 The first IBM PC arrives
1983 First consumer camcorders
1990s Widescreen TV, UK (16:9 aspect ratio)
1990s Digital TV arrives alongside analogue broadcast
1990s PCs get more and more multimedia abilities
1995 DVD players
1995 MiniDV digital video format introduced
1995/6 First digital (still) cameras for consumers
1998 TiVo launch (Personal Video Recorder)
2000's Rapid waning of VCR popularity
2000's Consumer adoption of digital (MiniDV) camcorders
2000 H.263 (ISDN) videoconf
2002 First movies shot using digital movie cameras rather than film
2003 3G networks start to arrive with Video (e.g. "3" UK)
2003 H.264 video codec defined (now the basis of everything from mobile video to YouTube to HD TV)
2005 Digital 3D movie cameras
2005 iTunes supports video
2005- Home computers get more advanced media storing/streaming (e.g. Apple TV,
Windows
Media Center)
2005- Video-enabled pocket media players
2005 Telepresence, immersive video conferencing, arrives
2006 YouTube launched
2006 Blu Ray players on sale
2007 BBC iPlayer - "watch again" broadcast TV via the Internet (now 20% of total UK traffic)
2007 Sales of LCD screens surpass CRT
2007 Launch of Nokia N95, phone with video recording/playback/editing
2008 IMAX Digital 2D/3D - popularizer of the 3D experience
2009 Samsung Omnia HD (HD video smartphone with OLED screen)
