There are differences between our architecture expectations of Hosted vs Cloud services, but the consumer of these services does not need to know. Cloud delivers greater scalability and dynamic use of resources that we would expect from a traditional hosted service. Part of the problem is the way we see inter-changeable use of the terminology.

You also point out some of the issues that someone availing of such services needs to be aware of – data protection and security. Depending on where you are and the prevailing legislation the service may not even be allowed to store particular information outside the jurisdiction the service is being used in.

In Europe we have EU umbrella laws covering data protection. In the US there are state by state issues to be considered.

These are issues that the consumer should be aware of and ensure they are covered by any SLA being entered into when acquiring the service.

Thanks for your comments

Neil

Before we called it hosted services. Hotmail has been around since I first got in the Internet, guess what? It is hosted in the cloud… 1990s!. There are many cloud based services that people are starting to make part of their lives. DropBox for example make people realize the potential benefits of keeping information in the cloud. In the enterprise world, services like Google Apps are being implemented in many small and medium organizations all over the world. The Montreal Gazette has once published an editorial called “The future is cloudy”. In it, it pointed out many Canadian companies switching to services like Google Apps and Soho. The article stated the benefits of these new services but also highlighted the fact that these services where outside the Canadian territory and laws have to be made to protect information. Although nothing on this article was new for a tech professional, the fact that a general public newspaper wrote about cloud services attest that the cloud is going outside the incubator and people are talking about it.
