I realise that HMP doesn't work properly when running under VMWare, but does it work when running on Microsoft's new Hyper-V? It uses completely difference architecture to VMWare so the timer issue may not exist?

Power consumption is a big issue in data centres these days and server consolidation is a high priority. Also virtual machines are easier to backup, restore, and move between servers. It would be great if HMP worked with at least one VM technology so I'm hoping it's Hyper-V.

My second question is does HMP work correctly running on a physical Windows 2008 Server in 32 bit and 64 bit flavours?

Thanks,

Gary.

Hi Gary:

Thanks for your question and feedback on needed features. Right now Dialogic is currently planning for HMP support for Vista SP1 32 bit and 2008 Server 32 bit. Virtualization support is currently under exploration. I did provide the feedback to our HMP product line manager as well.

Regards

DL

Thanks Daniel. It's good to know that it's at least on the cards. 2008 is a significant step beyond 2003 so it's a shame that HMP will hold people back from running 2008. (Please, please try to make it work with Hyper-V!)

Not 100% sure about this, but it was reported that one of our customers is running our HMP solution within a VMware ESX solution (VMware Infrastructure). This is something different than VMware workstation, which is actually running on top of your host. ESX instead is its own special OS on which the 'guests' running on top of it.

Keep us up-to-date of your own findings. I'm interested too in these possible solutions.

With regards,

VMWare have just made ESXi free, it used to sell for $500. I haven't tried it but read some of their documents when they announced it was going free. I don't have any spare PCs at the moment to try it out on (the down side of it running it's own host OS) but thank you for suggesting that HMP might run without problems on this platform.

Eize,

We are looking into HMP virtualization options as well, specifically using ESX 3.5.  Is there a way for you to follow up on the report of your customer using HMP on ESX?

Thanks!

Dave.

We are successfully running 16 virtual HMP workstations on 4 Windows 2008 64bit servers using Hyper-V.  These are production machines and have been up and running great for the last couple of months.

dearment,

That's great news!  Can you comment on the port density on each of the VM's, as well as the hardware configuration on the host servers?

Thanks,

Dave.
