Local Area Network (LAN)

A collection of devices that are interconnected via a common transportation medium (COAX, CAT5, Copper, twisted pair...etc.) for transferring data.

In general, LAN refers to the interconnection of devices within a building, a block, or a city and can represent a diameter of between a few feet and 7 miles. Anything beyond this range would become a Wide Area Network (WAN) which has no geographical limitations.
