Exploring the Implications of the Multi-Screen Phenomenon

By Bob Logan, Director, Dialogic Media Labs

The growth of video is explosive. YouTube users were uploading 15 hours of video per minute this January, and recently that rate has jumped to 20 hours per minute - and continues to climb steadily. At the same time, viewers are not only time-shifting and place-shifting, but now also device-shifting - that is, they want to watch video when they want, where they want, and on their device of choice.

What are the implications of the desire to watch the same video content on broadcast television, a laptop, or a mobile device at will? We have prepared a new white paper to survey the multi-screen (sometimes called "Three Screen") phenomenon, and explore why multi-screen services are so attractive, the role of the network operator in an expanded ecosystem, industry drivers, and technical challenges.

Business Aspects

Stratus Features Dialogic in Case Study
Stratus Telecommunications has just published a case study that discusses the implementation of a wholesale interconnect service and calling card offering for Blue Communications, Ltd in Barbados. The solution uses Stratus ENTICETM E-REV and the Dialogic® IMG 1010 Integrated Media Gateway.

Future Plans in Preliminary Datasheet
Many exciting enhancements are planned for the Dialogic® IP Media Server in the coming months, and the Dialogic marketing team has prepared a preliminary datasheet that describes them. To receive a copy, contact your local Dialogic sales representative or Dialogic Marketing. Note: You must have a signed NDA with Dialogic to receive a copy.

New Signaling Board Available
The new Dialogic® DSI SS7MDL4 Network Interface Board is now available, and supports SS7 and ATM network connections in a PCI Express, low profile board. Its flexible capacity licensing enables message processing from 16 to 124 low-speed links or 2 or 4 high-speed MTP or ATM links, and message rates of 30,000 MSU/second.

Technical Edge

New Migration Guidelines Available
During the next few months, Dialogic will publish a series of application notes on migrating between various Dialogic® products. The first in the series provides architectural guidelines for moving an application written for media boards with Dialogic® Springware Architecture to media products with Dialogic® DM3 Architecture (including Dialogic® Host Media Processing Software). It also aids in the initial design of an application for a system using boards with DM3 architecture, and serves as a reference for finding DM3-architecture-related information that can be used in the development process.

Solution Set for SIP Trunking
A new technology brief discusses a solution set that uses an Ingate SIParator® in tandem with a Dialogic® 2000 Media Gateway (DMG2000 Gateway) to bring SIP trunk services into a legacy enterprise environment. The combined SIP trunk security features of a SIParator and the SIP-to-PBX trunk conversion capability of a DMG2000 Gateway enable a cost-effective, secure, and reliable SIP trunk interface for an enterprise with a legacy PBX.
