Traditional Media and Signaling Platforms

Since the mid-1980s, solution providers have developed and deployed unique enterprise solutions as integrated systems, with their applications making API calls to DIalogic media and signaling on hardware interfaces, all deployed on a single server. This architecture is well suited for integrating and interfacing with traditional circuit switched TDM PBXs and PSTN.

IP Media and Signaling Platforms

Since the year 2000, there has been a shift to IP-PBX infrastructure in the enterprise, and an increasing use of host media processing software with VoIP and SIP signaling to deploy new solutions on the data network (instead of TDM / PSTN networks). This has resulted in an opportunity to change the  architecture of the media and signaling platforms. Today media platforms and the signaling interfaces have become more distinct entities in the deployment of UC solutions: the media server and the media gateway. Typically the SIP application and media reside in a single server, which can communicate directly with interoperable SIP IP-PBX's, Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSPs for SIP Trunking), or back to legacy TDM PBXs and the PSTN through a separate media gateway.
