How to install Dial-up Networking
There are a number of reason why it may be necessary to install Dial-up Networking (DUN):
- The installed version may be older than DUN 1.3, which is the minimum requirement.
- DUN may not be installed at all - this was a default for early versions of Windows 98
- DUN may have become corrupted - the classic symptoms for this are that the
DUN Connection itself works, but you are unable to browse the Internet - you
get "DNS Error" (or something similar) in the browser.
- Note: In this case you will need to uninstall the corrupted version prior to installing the new version. The process for install and uninstall in almost identical (see below).
- Note: Make sure you have the appropriate Windows CD or the appropriate download file for DUN 1.3 so that you can perform a successful re-install
- Note: Your existing Dial-up Networking Connections will not be affected by uninstalling and re-installing DUN.
Use the following procedure to install, uninstall, or re-install Dial-up Networking:
- Click 'Start' > 'Control Panel'
- Select 'Add / Remove Programs'
- Click on the 'Windows Setup' tab.
- Select 'Communications'
- If you are installing, place a check mark against Dial-up Networking by
clicking on it.
- If you are uninstalling, then uncheck the Dial-up Networking box.
- Click 'OK' to continue.
- Note: If you are uninstalling, then the following warning box will appear. Click 'OK' to continue to uninstall.
- Note: This warning will not appear if you simply installing Dial-up Networking.
- Windows will now add or remove the Dial-up Networking - have the Windows CD ready
- Click 'OK' to save and exit and the following pop-up window will appear to restart the computer.
- Click 'Yes' to continue, and and on successful re-boot you should have a working copy of Dial-up Networking installed.
