Dialogic® DM3 & JCT Media Boards

DM/V-B PCI failing at Download or at Run-Time failures

Problem Description:
has discovered a remote potential for some DM/V-B PCI boards which were shipped from between 5/1/05 to 1/30/06 to fail to download. However, in rare instances, the board passes the download process and failures can be seen at run-time during I/O operations or protocol errors.

The technical summary description describes typical failure modes that have been encountered.

The following boards are affected:

Solution Summary:
The issue is the result of an electrical characteristic change on the latest revision of some of the components being used on the boards.

This issue does not affect current inventory of boards as any suspect board has already been through an internal screen starting 12/19/05. This internal screen reduces the likelihood of a new board failing in the field. Additionally, boards in inventory have had their components replaced effective 2/1/06.

To find out if the specific board you purchased is part of a manufacturing lot of boards which may experience the issue identified above, please refer to the serial numbers on the last page. Serial numbers labels are on the boards and begin with the prefix "GG" followed by six digits. The serial number is located on the back of the board. If you position the board so that the front panel with network interfaces is on your left, and the black handles are on your right, the serial number will be located on the left hand side. The serial number label also has a barcode.

If you find a serial number on the list below that matches a board you purchased, your board may be affected by this hardware issue. You can DRA your board to for repair

The boards must be returned within the applicable warranty period and have a serial number in the range listed above to receive the free of charge repair.

US Customers: Please fill out the online DRA form, mentioning "Download" in the problem description field, at: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/draform.htm Non-US Customers: Please contact your RMA Call Center to arrange for repair.

Technical Discussion
The issue is the result of an electrical characteristic change on the latest revision of some of the components being used on the boards. has determined that the issue can be corrected by replacing a set of switches with a buffer.

As noted above, the typical failure scenario is seen at download time. If the board has been downloaded multiple times and has been running for more than 72 hours it is unlikely that the board is problematic. In some very rare instances, the board may download and application API failures can been seen at run-time.

Under Windows, if the problem occurs during download, a user would observe download failures in the DCM. Typically the event viewer would show the following error:

Under Linux, the download status would be displayed in a console window.

Downloading SP PBLMs succeeeded for board boardNumber=1
ERROR: waiting for 0x80011c message timed out. timeout period = 5000 ms
ERROR: No response from the SP Boot kernel

As mentioned, in rare cases, failures can be seen at run-time. The run-time failures would be seen in an unexpected API failure. Using dm3angel or dm3stderr utilities, if an error is encountered, a user would typically see the following error messages in the log files:

14:01:27.602| 001:CP1:pollSPs: sp2 qMsgRead failed : 0
14:01:27.602| 001:CP1: SP 2 NOT RESPONDING

Please note that Debugangel is turned off by default. Also although SP2 is typically seen in the failure cases, the failing component may range from SP2 to SP11
