How to Create Multimedia Menus

Multimedia menus for applications such as Video Mail include both video and audio information. The video information is usually text that matches the options being described to the caller in the audio message. Creating multimedia menus is a multi-step process using several utilities.

This TechNote outlines the steps for creating a multimedia menu.

  1. Create the visual screen portion of the multimedia menu using an application like Microsoft PowerPoint and saving the screen as a .jpg file.
  2. Create the audio portion of the menu using an application such as Sound Recorder and save the recording as a .wav file
  3. Create a multimedia file from the .jpg and .wav file using an application like Microsoft Moviemaker. It is important to note that Microsoft Movie Maker v1 saves DVSD encoded AVI type 2 files which is the format mmconvert requires, were Microsoft Movie Maker v2, which gets installed with WinXP SP2, saves files in wmv or AVI type 1 format.
To get AVI type 2 files using WinXP SP2 and MovieMaker v2, you must install a codec (http://users.tpg.com.au/mtam/software/pdvcodec.zip) and use a type 1 to type 2 converter (http://users.tpg.com.au/mtam/software/dv.zip)

After creating the video in Movie Maker, save to the DV-AVI format, convert to type 2 AVI using DvConverter.

Use the Dialogic mmconvert utility to split the AVI type 2 file into the Dialogic format video and audio files.

The mmconvert tool can be found at http://www.dialogic.com/support/helpweb/dxall/HMPWin/hmp30/omf/default.htm

AVI = Audio Video Interleave
DV-AVI = Digital Video AVI
DVSD = Digital Video Standard Definition
