Dialogic® IP Media Server

Generating Network Traces from Dialogic IP Media Server

Reasons for capturing network traces

For many troubleshooting situations, the Dialogic® IP Media Server (IPMS) sipd, mserv, fido, and VXML based logs (vxmld or pw_metricsfile) are sufficient to determine root cause of the issue.  However, if an issue is related to network quality or interoperation with third party network equipment, it may be useful to create a network capture.

How to collect traces through the IP Media Server Web User Interface:

To collect traces from the IPMS Web UI, use a secure HTTP connection through a web browser:

https://ipms_ip_address

Replace 'ipms_ip_address' with the IP address of the IPMS.

Once connected, at the login prompt, login with the "admin" username and password (default = "snowshore").

Then select Network->Utilities->Trace in the left-hand side navigation:

There are three settings options that need to be set to start the trace:

1)  Interface -- Select the Ethernet interface on which to trace.

For this you should select the interface set up for SIP/RTP traffic.  You can find this by going to Network->Interfaces and selecting the 'Configure' option on each of the Active interfaces.

For options 2 and 3, you will need to decide if you want to trace up to a particular size of trace file or for a particular time. The tracing logic is such that it will stop at the first occurrence of either the size limit or the time limit being exceeded.

For time-based tracing:

2)  Max Trace File Size (KB) -- Set this to all 9's giving max size.

3)  Max Trace Period (min) -- Set this to the number of minutes for which you would like to collect the trace.

For file size-based tracing:

2)  Max Trace File Size (KB) -- Set this to the size of the file you would like to trace for (in kilobytes).

3)  Max Trace Period (min) -- Set this to all 9's giving max time.

Once the options are entered, click 'OK'. The file name will be shown on the screen.

Afterwards, to find the trace use Logs->Trace Files menu in the left-hand side navigation:

While the trace is running, the active trace file - the one at the top - will continue to grow in size.  Upon completion of the trace check the box under the 'Select' box for the appropriate file and click 'Download'.

This file will be downloaded in a zipped format.  After unzipping, the file will have a *.trc extension.  If needed, rename to a *.cap extension to open it in Wireshark.
