To transfer files, programs etc. from a server to a computer on a network. When you download a Web document to your browser, the data are essentially copied to your computer from the Web server hosting the Web document. On the Web common protocols, such as FTP or HTTP, set the standard for data transmission. Copying files from your computer to a server, reversing the download process, is known as uploading.
