DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. An Internet Protocol for automatic assignment of IP addresses to computers or other devices on a network. DHCP uses dynamic IP addresses, allowing devices on the network to have a different IP address every time they connect to the network. Once a range of available IP addresses has been defined, DHCP keeps a constant overview of available IP addresses. Thus there will be no need to manually assign new devices individual IP addresses, freeing the network administrator to concentrate on other tasks. DHCP is supported by almost all operating systems.
