MX-lookup An MX-lookup is performed to find the destination mail server for an e-mail. The term is derived from the domain name system's mail exchange record (MX) that is used to specify which mail server should handle incoming mail for a domain. The lookup is performed via the name server and returns the IP address of the mail server which the outgoing e-mail will be sent to via SMTP.
