Who might eavesdrop on my data transfers?

Currently the biggest and most effective eavesdroppers are national agencies. In particular the United States' spy organization, NSA, is very proficient in encryption and decryption, and the Echelon project is quite efficient in gathering private data from the Internet, phone networks, etc. Hackers are especially known for collecting credit card numbers.
