When should I use static routing on Safepipe?

Static routing should only be employed when and where it is strictly necessary. It is very inflexible as all routing decisions remain in effect indefinitely, unless changed manually, and even small structural changes on your network, such as adding a new node to the network, may result in a need for several corrections in the routing table.
However, certain conditions may force you to configure the routes on your network statically:

  • if the routers on your network does not support dynamic routing with RIP (Routing Information Protocol).
  • if you need to be in complete control of the routes on your network, e.g. due to the structural composition of your network or the kind of data traffic that passes through it.

There may be additional reasons for statically defining the routes on your particular network. Whatever the reasons, there are a some prerequisites for static routing to work optimally:

  • all nodes must have statically configured IP addresses - static routing does not work with DHCP enabled on the network.
  • your network must be comparatively small with only few subnets and seldomly submitted to structural changes.
  • your network must have a single connection point to other networks.
  • there should be no redundant routes.
