IMAP The Internet Message Access Protocol, IMAP, is a standard specifying how mail clients interact with mail servers, and how to retrieve e-mail messages. When sending e-mail, on the other hand, the SMTP protocol will be used. Using IMAP, the mail server works as the main repository for e-mail messages. IMAP4, the most recent version of the standard, enables users with large amounts of incoming e-mail messages to browse through or search the messages by keywords while the messages are still kept on the mail server. Those messages that are interesting or important can thus be quickly identified and fetched without having to fetch the whole lot – a great advantage, especially if using an otherwise rather slow connection.
