Digital A system of discontinuous data, which at its most basic level distinguishes between the values 0 and 1, off and on, etc. Unlike an analogue device (e.g. a traditional clock with hands that move continuously), a device using a digital system cannot, in principle, describe states between 0 and 1. However, when the zeroes and ones are combined into a series it is possible to convey more complex information.
Computers or CD players are examples of devices using a digital system. By processing very large amounts of zeroes and ones such devices are able to simulate events as if they were continuous.
