IKE IKE is the automated key exchange protocol enabling authentication and encryption in IPSec. IKE is used each time a tunnel is established. IKE determines which protocol, algorithms and keys to use, verifies that both parties in the communication are who they claim to be, and then negotiates a session key, which is a temporary key used by IPSec for data encryption and authentication. IKE can use certificates or shared keys to verify the identities of both parties.
