Community

A community name is the SNMP version of a combined username/password. The community name is used to restrict who can retrieve information via SNMP. When an agent is polled by a manager, it checks the public community name provided in the request with the community name entered in its configuration. If there is a match, it honours the request. The default public community name is public, thus this name should be avoided for security reasons.
