MIME MIME, Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions, is a system for identifying different formats of data. MIME makes it possible to exchange files like graphics, sound, video, formatted text and other binary types of files over the Internet. An e-mail program is said to be MIME-compliant if it can both send and receive files using the MIME standard. Different types of files have designated MIME types (indicating the media) and subtypes (indicating the specific form), for example image/jpeg. The MIME type is added to the file for transmission via e-mail or across the Web as part of a Web page. The e-mail client or browser then reads the MIME type and displays the file accordingly.
