Dialogic Media Labs

Dialogic has assembled a world-class team of video R&D professionals to create new video technologies that will be delivered within Dialogic’s products and services. Our goal is to provide our customers with high-quality, high-performance video capabilities as well as advanced analysis tools to enable new revenue-generating video-based applications.

Researchers at Dialogic Media Labs, our in-house research and development laboratory, have made significant breakthroughs in video coding technologies. These patent-pending innovations provide dramatic improvement to the quality and performance of video content, especially when played over a wireless network. Some of these advancements include:

  • Advanced Bit Rate Control Algorithms: Within a bandwidth-constrained network (like a 3G mobile network), video quality often suffers because the network cannot handle the amount of data required to display the video content. This problem is especially evident when the video contains a lot of fast action, or many scene changes. Dialogic has developed patent-pending algorithms to maintain high video quality and strong audio/video synchronization in these challenging network conditions.
  • Frame Rate Adaptation: Dialogic has built software algorithms to eliminate the motion “choppiness” that is often experienced when watching video on a mobile device, leading to a higher-quality viewing experience
  • Perceptual Quantization: Using knowledge of the biology of human sight, Dialogic researchers have created techniques for focusing quality improvements on those areas within a video stream where the eye is most likely to focus. Our algorithms provide the viewer with a higher-quality experience while also reducing the processing power required on the remaining portions of the image.

Beyond video coding technologies, our researchers are also creating advanced software to analyze the video stream and provide useful information to enable new, revenue-generating applications. We are exploring several technical areas that can provide our customers with differentiated services. Some of our research areas include:

  • Quality of Experience measurement: Maintaining high quality is a critical requirement for any video application, especially those running in today’s wireless networks. However, the tools available today to measure video quality rely on measuring the quality of the network, and then estimating how the network quality affects the viewing experience. At Dialogic, we are creating new software to measure the viewing experience directly, allowing carriers to offer tiered levels of service (based on quality delivered), and providing information to create (and enforce) Service Level Agreements (SLAs) based on quality metrics.
  • Digital Watermarking: Watermarking is the insertion of some information (visible or invisible) into a video stream at the time of its creation. That information can then be recovered later when the video stream is played. This can be used to reduce piracy, verify authenticity of videos (in a corporate environment, for instance), or carry metadata through uncontrolled or legacy channels.
  • Pattern Detection: Analysis tools can detect a specified pattern within a video stream, and take action once that pattern is seen. One potential application would detect a company’s logo or brand within a video; that information may then be useful for advertising purposes. An advertiser can determine how often its brand was visible during the clip. It also provides the first step toward “logo replacement” – replacing one image with another, such as to provide customized content or meet changing marketing needs.
