Release Notes 213-372-01 April 2001 Eiconcard LAN Server (V5R1) Introduction ====================================================================== Eiconcard LAN Server provides connectivity to Eiconcard LAN Client. Eiconcard LAN Server can be used with Eicon Gateways running on the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 platforms. Consult this document for information on how to install and configure Eiconcard LAN Server, as well as for the latest information about known problems and limitation in this release of Eiconcard LAN Server. After installation, help on the Eiconcard LAN Server is available through the online help in the Eiconcard Connections or Eicon SNA LAN Gateway software. The information in this release note supersedes any corresponding information contained in the online help for Eiconcard Connections for Windows NT, Eiconcard Connections for Windows 2000, Eicon SNA LAN Gateway for Windows NT and Eicon SNA LAN Gateway for Windows 2000. Table of Contents ====================================================================== 1) System Requirements 2) Installing Eiconcard LAN Server 3) Configuring Eiconcard LAN Server 4) Starting and Stopping Eiconcard LAN Server 5) Known Limitations 6) Customer Support 7) Trademarks 1) System Requirements ====================================================================== The minimum requirements for a computer to run Eiconcard LAN Server are as follows: - An IBM-compatible x86-based computer running one of the following operating systems: - Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, with Service Pack 5 (or higher) - Microsoft Windows 2000, with Service Pack 1 The computer must meet at least the minimum system requirements for the operating system it is running. - The computer must also be running one of the following Eicon software packages: - Eiconcard Connections for Windows NT (V4R2b) - Eiconcard Connections for Windows 2000 (V5R1) - Eicon SNA LAN Gateway for Windows NT - Eicon SNA LAN Gateway for Windows 2000 - An Eiconcard supported by the chosen software. - A LAN adapter configured to use one or both of the following LAN protocols - TCP/IP - SPX/IPX 2) Installing Eiconcard LAN Server ====================================================================== To install Eiconcard LAN Server, choose the appropriate procedure below: a) If you have ECLAN Server (V4R2) already installed ---------------------------------------------------- NOTE: ECLAN Server (V4R2) was included with Eiconcard Connections for Windows 2000 (V5R1) (build 97). It is recommended that you first remove ECLAN Server (V4R2) from your computer, and then do a new installation of Eiconcard LAN Server (V5R1). Consult c) below for instructions on how to do a new installation. b) If you have an ECLAN Server version prior to V4R2 already installed ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Update the previous version as follows: NOTE: It is recommended that you stop the ECLAN service before you run the update. 1) Insert the Eiconcard LAN Client Server CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive. 2) Click Start, and then click Run. 3) In the Run dialog box, type: d:\server\setup.exe (where d: corresponds to your CD-ROM drive letter). 4) Click OK and follow the instructions presented on your screen. Eiconcard LAN Server is installed in the \Eicon folder, which was created when the Eiconcard Connections or Eicon SNA LAN Gateway software was installed on the computer. The old ECLAN Server software components are automatically backed up in the \Eicon\Backup folder. c) If you do not have a previous version of ECLAN Server installed ------------------------------------------------------------------ You can do a new installation as follows: 1) Insert the Eiconcard LAN Client Server CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive. 2) Click Start, and then click Run. 3) In the Run dialog box, type: d:\server\setup.exe (where d: corresponds to your CD-ROM drive letter). 4) Click OK and follow the instructions presented on your screen. Eiconcard LAN Server is installed in the \Eicon folder, which was created when the Eiconcard Connections or Eicon SNA LAN Gateway software was installed on the computer. 3) Configuring Eiconcard LAN Server ====================================================================== If you did a new installation of Eiconcard LAN Server, and you intend to use its default settings, you do not need to configure the software. If you updated from an ECLAN Server version prior to V4R2, your previous settings were saved and are used by Eiconcard LAN Server (V5R1). If you need to configure the Eiconcard LAN Server software, use the Eicon Configuration Program included with the Eiconcard Connections and Eicon SNA LAN Gateway software. To configure Eiconcard LAN Server, do as follows: 1) Click Start, point to Programs, point to Eicon, point to Eiconcards, and click Eicon Configuration. 2) Enter the desired values for LAN Transport and Service Trace. 3) Close the Eicon Configuration program. 4) Start the Eiconcard LAN Server service as follows: In Windows NT ------------- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Services. Select the Eiconcard LAN Server service, and click Start. In Windows 2000 --------------- Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services. Select the Eiconcard LAN Server service and click the start button. 4) Starting and Stopping Eiconcard LAN Server ====================================================================== Eiconcard LAN Server starts automatically after it is installed or updated, and whenever the computer is started. You can also manually start or stop Eiconcard LAN Server using one of the following methods: a) From the Windows Start menu In Windows NT ------------- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Services. Select the Eiconcard LAN Server service, and click Start or Stop. In Windows 2000 --------------- Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services. Select the Eiconcard LAN Server service, and click the start button or the stop button b) From the Windows Command Prompt To start Eiconcard LAN Server, enter: NET START ECLANSERVER To stop Eiconcard LAN Server, enter: NET STOP ECLANSERVER To change the startup type for the Eiconcard LAN Server service, follow these steps: 1) Open the Services dialog box. In Windows NT ------------- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Services. In Windows 2000 --------------- Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services. 2) Double-click the Eiconcard LAN Server service. 3) Select the Startup type. For more information on configuring Windows Services, consult the documentation for your operating system. 5) Known Issues ====================================================================== Using with Eicon SNA LAN Gateway for Windows 2000 ------------------------------------------------- If you are using Eicon SNA LAN Gateway for Windows 2000 and you have not restarted your computer since you installed the gateway software, you may experience problems after you upgrade to this release of Eiconcard LAN Server. If this occurs, restart your computer. 'ecserver status' Command ------------------------- The 'ecserver status' command shows the IP address of only one non-Eiconcard network adapter even if there is more than one non-Eiconcard network adapter with an IP address installed in the system. SPX/IPX ------- Using Eiconcard LAN Server for SPX/IPX with Eicon Routing Services (IP Connect) is not supported. 6) Customer Support ====================================================================== Eicon Networks Customer Services personnel are committed to providing the best possible technical support to all Eicon Networks customers.
