HMP - License in NFV/Virtual environment

  • Hi,

with SU274 released on January 21st the Standalone Licensing Server feature is deprecated, I wonder which would be the correct way to handle licensing in a virtual environment like NFV or other complex virtual environments where it is not guaranteed that some resources (specifically ethernet MAC addresses) are preserved on virtual machines when they are hot deployed on a pool of resources or migrated.

Is there any alternative to SLS or a best practice to apply or just there is no solution to this problem?

    Thanks,

    Alberto

  • In this case the SLS was being replaced by a different license software underneath which may be used. Thus it will still remain going forward, but will be introduced as a different feature similar to that of how it works on XMS 4.0 going forward (potentially). But this has not been brought in as of yet, as its a roadmap item.

    Jeff

  • Thanks Jeff,

just to clarify, I am not sure to have correctly understood, the SLS feature is obsoleted (I don't know if it is still there or not, but definitely it doesn't make sense to rely on it for new deployments) while the new feature is still to come, this makes HMP not deployable in NFV/Cloud environment if nodelocked license based on ethernet MAC address persistence cannot be guaranteed, is it correct?

Is there any detail about the roadmap and when this feature would be available?

    Thanks,

    Alberto

  • Just to clarify HMP 4.1 was never supported in the cloud environments in this case. Only on VMs like XEN or VMWare as listed in the HMP 4.1 release updates notes. The prior feature was something used between physical servers, not in the cloud.

  • Hi Jeff,

sorry if the terms I used were misleading, it is just because from a practical point of view NFV can reasonably be considered like elements deployed in a private cloud environment, definitely requirements on the VMs are clear, assuming VMWare, my question was only directed to understand if the product would allow a flexible deployment and if not if this feature will be available (I think we have no doubt it make sense in general) and, if known, when this will happen.

We've several thousands MRF ports deployed based on Dialogic legacy boards and HMP virtual boards and migration plans towards NFV deployments in progress, if a feature that is somewhat considered mandatory in this environment is removed/obsoleted I think it is reasonable to ask clarification about what and when a brand new similar feature will be available.

This is my main concern: understand which impact we can have on the plans we shared with our customers.

    Thanks,

    Alberto

  • Ok, if that is the case then I would suggest you raise this question with Enghouse (ie old dialogic) sales representative (FAE) as it goes beyond the scope of the forum in your specific use case.
